Bermondsey Cat Sitters’ Top Tips

All things cat litter!

As experienced cat owners/cat sitters, over the years we have learnt a great deal about cat care – and most importantly how to make life as easy as possible while caring for your kitties!

So here are some of our top tips, favourite products and pieces of wisdom that may help you

Litter, trays and cat litter bags

So starting with the dirty topic of cat litter. We have tried so many types over the years, and have always wanted to use the most natural possible, while also using something that was as cost effective as possible. Since looking after many older cats who no longer would go to toilet outside, we had to learn by trial and error. We have tried the wood pellet based types, the heavy clumping types, all of which were always a nightmare to dispose of, got really heavy when wet, and needed frequent changes.

Several years ago we came across a corn based cat litter, and have never looked back! It is lightweight, it clumps, and if your plumbing is up to it, you can even flush the clumps that you remove down the toilet – it really is win win!

The litter also doesn’t have an awful smell and most importantly, the cats don’t seem to mind it, and it is not toxic in anyway. So for us, we always recommend buying Worlds Best Cat Litter to everyone!

So as well as the worlds best cat litter, due to our living arrangements we use biodegradable poop bags to remove the cat poo and wee! Most people will be able to just flush it down the toilet, but if you are not lucky enough to do that, these bags are great to use.

Cleaning the Cat litter tray:

We used to use dettol, bleach and all sorts of nasty chemicals cleaning the trays, but we stopped this and started using enzyme cleaners. These seem so much more gentle, and do a great job of getting rid of the awful smells. Here are the ones we recommend:

Here are some other cat litter tips.

  • Always fill your litter tray to a decent depth, it usually means it will last longer too, especially if you are using clumping litter. The worlds best cat litter lasts a very long time – we can go for several weeks without having to do a full change, just remove the clumps and top up a little.
  • Always fill your cat litter tray away from the cats. There is so much dust generated (even from those that say they are dust free) and it can get into their lungs, and cause some serious damage – this we certainly learnt from experience (and an expensive vet visit one Christmas eve!).
  • With the worlds best cat litter we have stopped using cat litter liners, as it is easier to either compost, or you can just put straight into a bin bag – so less waste is created.
